There are many things we can’t control in life, but the one thing we CAN control is what we put in our mouths each day. When people ask me how they can improve their health, this is the first thing I tell them. It doesn’t matter if you’re dealing with weight issues, chronic disease, autoimmune disorders, or cancer. I firmly believe that nutrition is the most powerful ally to not only prevent disease, but to also reverse and cure it. It’s just one of the many reasons I am so ecstatic about Food Matters!
Food Matters is the most compelling food documentary I have seen to date, and I have seen them all. I’ve posted the movie trailer on this page. Although the trailer seems to place focus pretty squarely on pharmaceutical companies, the film actually highlights many key factors in the current state of poor health in the United States. Some of the main points from the video that I couldn’t agree more with:
-Chemicals, pesticides, and overly processing of foods is supplying us with deficient toxic food.
-Our society is suffering from chronic malnutrition. You’re not supposed to be tired in the afternoon!
-Most people spend $$ on material possessions, rather than giving their families the best food available.
-Raw unadulterated foods should comprise a large part (at least ½) of our meals.
-Doctors are surprisingly uneducated and uninterested in nutrition as therapy. Less than 6% receive any formal nutritional training.
-The medical profession treats the disease by treating symptoms with pills, rather than treating the cause. We need to change the root cause!
-Cardiovascular and other Western diseases are “lifestyle diseases” which can be prevented and treated with proper nutrition. Billions of $$ are spent each year on bypass surgeries for conditions that are completely avoidable.
-Good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.
-We need to get serious about prescribing nutrition FIRST….not last.
-If we really want to turn this health epidemic around, we need education not medication!
One of the experts in the movie provides a thought provoking analogy when he says, “A cancer patient who goes to the doctor asking for nutritional therapy for their condition is much like someone walking into a French restaurant and hoping to order shrimp lo mein. It’s not on the menu. They don’t know how to make it, and you’re not going to be having it.”
This is not some far out, one-sided dig at pharmaceutical companies by any means. On the contrary, it’s a much needed and overdue look at something most of us already know we need to be paying more attention to. Everyone knows they need to exercise and eat right, but somehow people have conveniently forgotten that it’s a personal responsibility to do so. Perhaps you haven’t lost enough loved ones to cancer or heart disease or other diseases, which could very well have been prevented by living a healthy lifestyle? Well I have, and I’m not about to let the media, the food corporations, or the politics that drive what has become the status quo in this country determine my or my family’s fate.
I believe that you care for your family just as much as I do for mine. That is why I want anyone reading this blog to rent or buy the movie Food Matters. It will be the best 1 hr. 20 minutes you have spent all week I guarantee it. Take the information to heart and think long and hard about the choices you make from here on out. If you do watch the film, please come back and post your thoughts and comments here. I would love to hear what you think!
